Come out and kick up your heels for a good cause at Depot Market Square at the inaugural Urban Barn Dance. Music for your dancing feet will be provided by “jamgrass” band Deadwood Revival!

This is a family event so bring the kids and enjoy local eats, sweets, and brews! All donations will go directly towards providing clean drinking water to children & communities without it- starting in Ethiopia, just one well can provide a community of 250 people with clean water. The event is sponsored by Evangeline International

Tickets cost $15 per adult or $40 per family and are available at: Boundary Bay Brewery, The Food Co-op, Bellingham Farmers Markets or at the door.

Day 147 – 365 Things To Do In Bellingham, WA – The Fairhaven Salmon BBQ & Sidewalk Sale

Saturday is the Fairhaven Salmon BBQ. It has become a Fairhaven tradition every September. Live music and Pacific Northwest King salmon – cooked by fishermen who know the best barbequing techniques is the main stay, with some delicious side dishes, like coleslaw, bread, corn-on-the-cob, a beverage, and dessert. Hot-dog meals are available for the kids who haven’t learned to love our Northwest favorite dish.

The Sidewalk Sale throughout the Fairhaven district starts at 11 am and continues till 5 pm. Do your shopping while enjoy the tantalizing aromas of the bbq and the sounds of the party in the Village Green

There is still time to register for The Bellingham Traverse. Their website says “Wild Salmon Do It! You should too.”

The Traversre is a fundraising event for soloists, tandem and relay teams that celebrates the lifecycle of wild salmon, recognizing the natural and urban challenges of their life-long journey.

The event is Saturday, Sept. 18th – The course recreates the urban and natural challenges that salmon face in their life’s journey. The course follows urban greenways and roads through Bellingham, showcasing Boulevard Park, Lake Padden Park, Fairhaven Park, and Marine Park.

The course also heads out into the open water of Bellingham Bay finishing at a hidden beach at the end of Cornwall Avenue, where all teams gather to finish the last leg together as they “trek” the last 1/2 mile to the finish line at the Depot Market Square and Boundary Bay Brewery.

“Each participant (SPAWNER) is encouraged to choose an environmental group or related non-profit.. The group that they choose will be whom they will be raising funds for through pledges. This event is unique in that participants have the opportunity to choose the group that their pledges will benefit. 100% of what is raised goes directly to the group of choice.”

To encourage people to raise money, ”Bait” is donated by local companies.
For every $500 that you raise, you get cool Traverse gear and a raffle ticket to win the great prizes.

The Course consists of a 5.5 mile Run, 6 mile Mountain bike, 18 mile Road Ride, 3 mile Trail Run, 4 milePaddle, .5 mile Team Trek to the finish line at Boundary Bay Brewery.

The 3rd Annual Whatcom County Farm Tour is today Saturday September 11, 2010.

It’s a great day to get out and enjoy the beauty and bounty of fresh flavors and local food of Whatcom County on this FREE, family friendly self-guided tour. Get out and wander the fields and orchards, practicing cider pressing , and hear stories of the hardworking folks who put food on our tables?

Day 144 – 365 Things To Do In Bellingham, WA – St. Sophia Greek Festival

This weekend is the St. Sophia Greek Festival, located in the back parking lot of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 510 E. Sunset Drive.

There are Greek dancers performing native Greek dances, Greek music playing constantly, church tours and other activities, but it’s the large variety of foods that really brings people to the festival.

You can enjoyed lamb and beef Gyro or souvlaki in a pita with lamb or chicken, fresh sliced onions, tomatoes and lots of tzatziki sauce, a dip made out of yogurt, cucumber, and garlic, Greek salads, Greek desserts like the familiar baklava to numerous cookies sweetened with honey and the perfect compliment to some Greek Coffee.

St. Sophia Greek Festival continues from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Day 143 – 365 Things To Do In Bellingham, WA – Get ready for the Lookout Arts Center Soapbox Derby

Saturday is Race Day at the Lookout Arts Center Soapbox Derby from noon to 9 pm.

It sounds like it could be a very wild ride!

Their website says “Calling all speed demons, grease monkeys, crackpot inventors and rubber-neckers! We need teams of up to 4 people to design, construct and race a gravity-powered vehicle down our steep and extremely dangerous off-road course.”

18 & older for this dare devil event.

Prizes awarded for multiple categories, including:

Best style/costumes
creative engineering
spectacular crash
slowest time
fastest time

Lookout Arts Center is located just about 1/2 south of South Lake Samish exit of I5 on highway 99 opposite the Squires Lake trailhead
